Unix at Home: Linux
If you like working in the CAMLAB and you have a PC at home, chances
are good that you can install Linux and enjoy a lot of the power that
you find here in the lab (modulo the fast internet connection and a few
GB of disk space...).
There are many reasons for doing so:
- Linux will typically run faster and is more stable than other
operating systems.
- You will have a complete version of LaTeX as well as other important tools
installed by default. Unfortunately, Mathematica, Mathlab,
etc. are not free, but there is somewhat moderately priced
student version of Mathematica which is much more
stable than the Irix version which is installed in the
CAMLAB.
- You can set up the same X-Window
configuration at home and at school.
