Summer Semester 2026
Summary
This module comprises a one-semester project in a specific
application domain. This project can be situated in an external
business, a research institute, or a research group at the KU. Students
will analyze a business or scientific problem and work toward a solution
using tools from data science, machine learning or mathematical
modeling.
Requirements
- The project should be done in teams of typically 2 students. For
larger teams or solo projects, contact the instructor.
- There are approximately bi-weekly meetings where attendance is
mandatory.
- Results must be summarized in a written report. As a rough guide for
the length of the report, you should have between 10 and 15 pages per
team member. Deviations from these guidelines should have a reason,
e.g. papers with a lot of rigorous mathematics can sometimes be shorter,
data-heavy papers might need to be longer.
- The report must include a contributor statement that outlines the
contributions of each team member.
- A seminar presentation of the results is required (20 minutes +
question time).
- Grading is based on team performance. However, the instructor may
give individual contributor grades where appropriate.
Deadlines
- Team and topic selection by email to the instructor by April 19,
2026
- Final assignment of topics by the instructor by April 22, 2026
- Final report due September 30, 2026
